* Heating Element is optimal size. Bigger is NOT better. Some manufactures use a larger-than-necessary heating element to speed up the distillation process so they can claim their heating element is bigger and can make water quicker. (Note that bigger heating elements do not cost any more to manufacture than smaller heating elements.) However, a heating element with higher wattage than necessary can boil water too rapidly causing it to splash excessively and get into the condensing coil. When that happens, VOCs and other pollutants can mix with, and contaminate the distilled water. Some manufacturers install a “splash shield” over the steam inlet in a futile attempt to reduce contamination. This is counter-productive because it does not completely solve the problem of contamination and it also prevents the distiller from being as energy efficient. The purity of your distilled water should not be compromised in order to save a little time making it. We have found that a 565 Watt heating element is ideal for a four litre water distiller. When making water overnight as many H2oLabs customers do, the small amount of extra time it takes will not be noticed. Just as in Nature, it takes a little time and patience to make the very purest water.

* All Plastics Food Safe & BPA-Free. Rest assured that all plastics used in H2oLabs water distillers are food safe materials that are used to package foods of all types at your local grocery. However due to the ever increasing consumer caution regarding plastics in general and polycarbonate that contains BPA in particular, we have focused special attention on the plastic parts that come in contact with the pure water. For example H2oLabs Model 100, 100SS, 300 and 300SS water distillers do not have a plastic tube attached to the end of the condensing coil which can be found on other makes. Even more importantly, none of the distillers offered by H2oLabs have polycarbonate collection containers. The use of polycarbonate containers for the purpose of water storage is controversial. The basis of this controversy is that hydrolysis degradation by water occurring at elevated temperature releases Bisphenol A , (BPA). The use of BPA in the manufacture of polycarbonate is very concerning. Even minuscule exposures increase risks for breast cancer, prostate cancer, infertility, early puberty, metabolic disorders and type-2 diabetes.

* Activated Carbon Filter Housing. The most noteworthy plastic part of water distillers is the first part that the warmest pure water touches as it leaves the condenser, the activated carbon housing and/or nozzle. H2oLabs Models 100 and 100SS have a “PP”, (polypropylene), nozzle that is food safe and BPA-free. However for those customers who want an extra measure of caution, an optional Glass Activated Carbon Housing is available. (The Glass Activated Carbon Housing is standard with H2oLabs Models 300 and 300SS and is not available on any of the competing models specified above.)

* Fail-Safe Fuse. A fuse is the safest way to protect you and a heating appliance. Circuit breakers do not provide fail-safe protection and because of that, are not certified by Underwriters Laboratories for use in an appliance that heats. In a misguided attempt to prevent frequent fuse replacements due to inadequate electrical engineering, some water distiller manufacturers replace the fuse with dangerous circuit breakers. (If circuit breakers fail, the appliance will continue heating which could potentially cause a fire or injury.) H2oLabs water distillers have been designed for maximum safety and reliability which means that fuse replacements are very rare.
